Hong Kong International Airport (Hong Kong Airport), also known as Chek Lap Kok Airport, is considered the main airport of the People's Republic of China, and is one of the busiest airports in the Asian continent and worldwide. It is located on Chek Lap Kok Island (hence its name), at a distance of 34 kilometers northeast of Hong Kong Island in China.
It was inaugurated in 1998 to replace the previous Kai Tak Airport, created in 1925, and then located in the city of Kowloon, its elimination from the airport system was made due to the increase of its air traffic, which was growing steadily. Today Hong Kong International Airport is operated by the Hong Kong Airport Authority, a public body of the Hong Kong Government.
During 2008, approximately 48.5 million passengers passed through its facilities, and in recent years it has been considered one of the most important airports in the world. It has a capacity to move about 35 million passengers a year.
